Songs for Querks

Many infant classes have sets of Querks. If you have a set in your classroom, have you considered encouraging the pupils to put on a show, to tell the Querks' stories?

I have written seven songs to go with the set, to complement the story of the Querks adventures. These simple easy-to-learn-and-sing songs will enrich the play experience and provide a focus for class participation. Erasmus, Alvar, Bogdan, Cedric and Drago all have their own songs and there is an opening and closing song. You can hear the first song and Alvar's by clicking on the 'samples' link.

The package includes a CD and set of song words. The CD has me singing to piano accompaniment and then the songs with piano only in case you want to put on a show. I learned, in the summer of 2007, that Spectrum had introduced new story lines for the Querks, so, if you have a 'new' set of Querks, there are new songs to go with the new Querk adventures.

I am delighted to say that the CD is now available from Spectrum sales representatives. December 2007.

Alvar's Song

Alvar goes north and meets geese, seals and a moose.

The opening song

The first song explains why the Querks set out on their adventures.

The Stinky Cheese Man and

other Fairly Stupid Tales

I was approached by a Year 3 teacher in West Sussex to write some songs for a play she had written based on this book, by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, published by Puffin (ISBN 0-14-054896-3).

It was, she assured me, very popular with her class and she wanted to put on an end-of-term drama production with this book as the basis. I wrote seven, short, easy-to-learn-and-sing songs which either prepare the audience for what is to come, or comment on what has just happened.

I was fortunate enough to see the performance, and it was truly fantastic. She stuck very closely to the book and the pupils responded marvellously, It was very funny and the songs went down very well with cast and audience.

This song comes near the end of the show.

The opening song

This song starts off the show.

Charlie and the Chocolate factory

'Charlie' is a fantastically popular story with youngsters and a brilliant tale. You can buy a play version from Puffin but you may find it is not entirely suitable for you. You may like to ask your pupils (or cast) to list the most important parts of the story and ask them how to act them. It would be brilliant for your literacy work and it need only be very simple. And it would be the children's own work!

Whatever you choose, the songs come on two CDs. I have written 11 great songs to accompany the action.

1. The Brat song (for the 4 repulsive children who win the first tickets)

2. The Bucket Song (about how poor Charlie's family is)

3. Holy Moses (The song for when Charlie finds the last golden ticket)

4.Wonka's Welcome (The song Mr Wonka sings at the start of the tour)

5.Oompa rap (A song for the Oompa Loompas)

6,7,8,9. One More's Gone A song as each of the ghastly children meet a grisly end

10.Charlie's Welcome (the same as Wonka's Welcome but now Charlie owns the factory) and

11. Didn't He Do Well - a song to close the show.

Holy Moses

“The songs, which are closely matched to the Roald Dahl story come on two CDs. CD 1 is for rehearsal purposes and has me singing with a piano accompaniment and then me singing to an instrumental accompaniment. The second CD has a piano-only set of tracks and an instrument-only set. The latter two could be used if you were planning a performance.”

Songs for Robin Hood

The story of Robin Hood is as popular today as it has ever been. I've got a great play which touches on many aspects of the outlaw's life, but if you don't fancy a full-scale drama production, you might like to think of putting on a presentation, with songs and stories of Robin Hood, his Merry Men, the lovely Marion and their battles with the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham. I have written six songs for the play but you may choose to use fewer: Robin, Little John, The Sheriff all have their own songs. The CD and sheet music are available now

Songs for Scrooge

Charles Dickens's classic 'A Christmas Carol' is a brilliant story for Christmas time. Of all Dickens's work, it is very accessible for children to perform. You could develop your own script, or get your pupils to plan their own. I have 5 songs which complement the story.

1) Mr Scrooge to You where Ebeneezer shows us what an unpleasant piece of work he is

2) Ebeneezer Change Your Ways where the ghost of Mr Marley tries to persuade Scrooge to be more generous.

3) The Spirit of Christmas Past

4) The Spirit of Chistmas Present

5) The Spirit of Christmas to Come

Comments

Dear Robert, just wanted to let you know that our play was a real success. The children really did give a great performance and the music went down really well. The children enjoyed the music a lot and it really gave the play that something special, also during rehearsals. We will listen to it in future and be reminded of a great evening. Hope this won't be the last time that I will be appreciating you're work. I'll certainly recommend you to others.

Songs for St George

The story of St George and the Dragon is, no doubt, a fanciful one but St George has captured the imagination and patriotic spirit of people in many countries. According to Wikipedia, countries that celebrate St George's Day (23rd April) include England, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Georgia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Republic of Macedonia. Cities include Moscow in Russia, Genoa in Italy, Ljubljana in Slovenia, Beirut in Lebanon, Qormi and Victoria in Malta, Valencia and the old Crown of Aragon in Spain and many others.

If you want to study the legend of St George I have a play here that will help. If however you want to put on short presentation, my songs will help too. There are 6 great singable songs altogether and follow the life of the saint from Roman soldier to dragon-slayer and princess-saver.
